Portugal face Switzerland for the 26th time in their history in the Round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup. This has been a competitive rivalry, with Portugal winning nine times and the Swiss picking up 11 victories. It will be their third meeting of 2022, with the two sides picking up a win each earlier in the year. 

Fernando Santos’ team got the job done early in Group H. Two wins from their first two matches saw them qualify for the next round before a heavily rotated side was beaten by South Korea in their final group game. Experienced heads Manuel Akanji, Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri have been crucial, while Breel Embolo has given them star quality up front. The Monaco striker is Switzerland’s leading scorer at the tournament, netting twice.
