The Netherlands take on Argentina for the tenth time in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup. So far, the Dutch have the edge in the head-to-head with four wins to Argentina’s three. Their previous two meetings were both 0-0 World Cup draws (2006 & 2014), although the South Americans did win on penalties eight years ago. 

Louis van Gaal’s side have been excellent so far and are one of the few unbeaten teams left in the tournament. After two wins and a draw in the group stage, the Dutch produced an imperious performance to defeat the USA in the last 16. Cody Gakpo has been the star of the show with three goals in four appearances, while Memphis Depay got off the mark last time out. Denzel Dumfries has also been very impressive. The right-back showcased his attacking qualities against the USA by providing two assists while also getting on the scoresheet.  

Argentina have bounced back well after a defeat against Saudi Arabia on matchday one. Lionel Scaloni’s side have won three straight matches since then, including a 3-1 victory against Australia in the last 16, and have lost just one of their previous 40 fixtures. Lionel Messi remains La Albiceleste’s most important player, and he has been on fire in Qatar, hitting three goals and providing one assist. Julian Alvarez has also started to hit form – he has started the last two matches and scored in both.
