QATAR World Cup 2022

Round of 16

Argentina hope to improve their impressive record against Australia when they meet in the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup. La Albiceleste have dominated the head-to-head, winning five of seven meetings, including the most recent in 2007.

Lionel Scaloni’s side recovered well after a shock defeat against Saudi Arabia on matchday one. Back-to-back 2-0 wins against Mexico and Poland saw them top Group C, and their impressive recent run of form now reads as one defeat in their last 39 matches. Unsurprisingly, Lionel Messi has been the star man for Argentina so far, with two goals and an assist in three games. But Julian Alvarez is one to watch – he scored in his first tournament start last time out.

Like their opponents, Australia also recovered from a loss on matchday one to progress. Graham Arnold’s side beat Tunisia and Denmark to reach the last 16 for the second time in their history. The Socceroos’ three main forwards – Mitchell Duke, Craig Goodwin and Mathew Leckie – have all scored in Qatar and are expected to lead the Aussie attack in this one.

Australia have never beaten South American opposition at the World Cup (D1, L3). Can they end that record and cause a major upset at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium? Make your predictions with BetVictor’s Argentina v Australia World Cup Betting options.
