The Madrid Open, also known as the Mutua Madrid Open, and previously called the Madrid Masters, is a men’s and women’s tournament held in May each year in Madrid, Spain. The tournament is a prestigious stop on the men’s ATP Tour Masters 1000 and a Premier Mandatory event of the WTA tour. It was hard court up until 2008 and is now red clay – it switched from red clay to blue in 2012 and returned to red in 2013. Roger Federer is the only player to win on all three surfaces, winning the tournament on hard courts, and blue and red clay.
