Overview
Gillingham and Sunderland have most often met in and around the third tier of English football. They faced off for the first time in the play-offs of 1987/88. Sunderland finished 20th in the second division and Gillingham finished fifth in the third. Gillingham won the semi-finals over two legs but lost narrowly to Swindon in the final. Sunderland came down and Gillingham failed to go up.Since Sunderland’s fall from grace and relegation down to League One in 2018, the Black Cats have just edged it in this one, including a 2-0 win early in 2020/21.
