Overview

Back in the day, this fixture used to be a little one-sided. Fernando Torres once said he was the only Atletico Madrid fan in his class at school. Since El Niño wore the number 9 and Diego Simeone got El Atleti back to the big-time, they’ve been a lot closer to their bitter rivals at the top of the La Liga table.

While they might be more than 20 titles behind Real Madrid, they’ve been close, but not close enough, in the Champions League in recent seasons. Atletico lost the Champions League final against Los Blancos in 2014 and 2016 as well as the semi in 2017. League form has seen little between these sides in recent seasons with three draws out of six from 2017 to 2020.
