Overview
El Viejo Clásico, or El Otro Clásico, is one of the most historic rivalries in Spanish football. It pits two of the most successful clubs in the country against each other – Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao. Their first meeting was in the Copa del Rey final in 1903, which was won 3-2 by Los Leones. The pair went on to contest a further eight Cup finals up until 1958, with Bilbao winning five and Madrid claiming the other three. However, since then it has been Los Blancos who have dominated this fixture. They have a significant advantage in the head-to-head and have dished out some thrashings, including a 7-1 league win against the Basque side in 1980.
