Overview
This is one of the fiercest rivalries in English football. It pits two major Northern clubs against each other, Yorkshire outfit Leeds and Lancashire giants Man United. Their first meeting in 1923 was a drab 0-0 draw. However, since then games between The Whites and The Red Devils have become extremely feisty. Indeed, the rivalry intensified during the eras of Matt Busby and Don Revie in the 1960s.One of the biggest matches between the pair was a 1977 FA Cup semi-final. Dubbed the ‘Battle of the Roses’ on the matchday programme, it was an ill-tempered encounter, which even saw Denis Law and Jack Charlton throw punches at each other. Manchester United ultimately ran out 2-1 winners.
