This rivalry first got going in 1897 when the two clubs faced off in an FA Cup tie. Unfortunately for Barnsley, they suffered one of the heaviest defeats in their history that day as Derby County stormed to an 8-1 success at the old Baseball Ground.

That set the tone for this fixture, as The Rams have continued to dominate the head-to-head against The Tykes ever since. They even condemned the South Yorkshire side to relegation to League One in May 2018 after beating them 4-1 on the final day of the season.
