These two clubs met in the French Division 2 Championship play-offs in the 1976/77 season. Monaco had won Group A of the league phase and Strasbourg finished top of Group B, meaning both were promoted. However, a play-off match was needed to decide the champions and it was Les Coureurs who emerged victorious.Since then, Les Monégasques have gone on to totally dominate in this fixture. They have a healthy lead in the head-to-head and even put together a 15-match unbeaten run between 1980 and 1992, winning 12 and drawing three.
