Overview
This meeting between two of the biggest clubs in English football has been a closely contested fixture since their first meeting in 1983.The fixture will forever be remembered for Michael Thomas’s last gasp strike in a 2-0 win for Arsenal at Anfield, where they snatched the league from Liverpool with practically the last kick of the 1988/89 season.
Then there was the FA Cup ‘Michael Owen’ final of 2001, where Liverpool’s sharp shooter struck twice late on to seal a dramatic 2-1 victory.
One of the most notable recent meetings between the two sides came in April 2009, with Arsenal’s Andrey Arshavin scoring all four of the Gunners goals in a 4-4 draw at Anfield.
October 2019 saw another high scoring draw between the two clubs at Anfield in the League Cup, with Liverpool eventually winning on penalties following a 5-5 draw in normal time.
