Founded in 1919, Salernitana are based in the ancient city of Salerno. They play at the Sadio Arechi, which has a capacity of 26,000. The club initially wore a light blue and white striped kit. But they now play in dark red and are nicknamed I Granata (The Garnets). Having spent a lot of time in the lower leagues, Salernitana returned to Serie A in 2021. This ended a 23-year absence from the top-flight. Former Italy star Gennaro Gattuso spent a season at the club in the late 1990s.
