These two rivals first met in October 1970. It was the Vancouver Canucks who won the game 5-3 – this was their first win as a franchise. Since then, the Canucks have continued to excel this fixture. They were very impressive in the 1994 Western Conference Finals series, when they beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1. Mats Sundin is a name that fans of both franchises will know. He scored many goals for the Leafs and captained them for 11 seasons before joining the Canucks in 2008.
