This rivalry began in 1979. The Boston Bruins beat the Carolina Hurricanes, then known as the Hartford Whalers, 5-4 at home. That result set the tone for this fixture, as Boston have a sizeable lead in the overall head-to-head. The Bruins tend to get the better of the Hurricanes when it comes to the postseason. They’ve defeated their rivals in the Stanley Cup play-offs in 1990, 1991, 1999, 2019, and 2020, while Carolina won in 2009. Boston’s 2019 win was a 4-0 series sweep in the Eastern Conference Finals, a result which won them the Prince of Wales Trophy.
