Overview

This rivalry began way back in 1887. The Pittsburgh Pirates (then the Pittsburgh Alleghenys) got off to a great start. They won each of their first four games against the Chicago Cubs (then the White Stockings). But it was the Cubs who came out on top in one of the most famous games between the pair. In the 1938 season, the Pirates had consistently been in the lead in the National League standings. But in the second game of a three-game series, Gabby Hartnett hit a late home run. That gave the Cubs a win which moved them above the Pirates, and they went on to secure the NL pennant a few days later. The home run has since been dubbed the “Homer in the Gloamin’”.
